Pitching FAQ

What if I don’t know what to write about?

The world of pop culture is massive, and knowing where to start, particularly when you’re new, can feel daunting.

One way to start is to think about your favorite fandoms and what they mean to you. Now imagine your best friend asks you why you’re so passionate about them. Perhaps even consider that a friend has asked you to explain what something means within that fandom or why certain rules apply within that universe. This is a good jumping off point for starting to think about the kinds of articles we’re looking for. Start out simple, don’t get overly involved in the deep specifics and references that only hardcore fans would know, and don’t assume everyone has the knowledge you have.

Another way to look at it is by starting with some research. Think about some topics you’re interested in in relation to your favorite fandoms. Have a look what other websites have covered and look for the gaps - what did they miss or how did they misrepresent that topic? How would you have presented a more compelling argument or discussion on that topic? Or maybe no one has covered it at all. These can be useful in helping you think about your subject matter in new and unique ways.

"Is there something in pop culture that's annoying or frustrating you? I often find the most interesting features are when people have strong opinions on this front." - FANDOM UK Managing Editor, Chris Tilly

I’d like to brainstorm some ideas, how can I do this?

Portent's Content Idea Generator is a fun, sometimes irreverent title generator. Use this one to find a unique angle on popular topics. Sometimes it generates some nonsensical options, but play around with it a bit and see what you come up with.

The following links are good reads for simple ideas on how to brainstorm ideas on your own. They’re a little more marketing-focused, but the methods all work well for brainstorming editorial content too.

You can also leave a message on our Discussions board, or, as always, feel free to reach out to the FANDOM editorial team and we can help steer you in the right direction.

I need inspiration, where can I go to be inspired or find out what shows/movies/games/comics etc FANDOM want to cover?

We’re working on this, stay tuned!

However, remember the long list of fandoms you ticked off when you first applied? Generally, those are topics and major fandoms we want coverage of. Look over that list again, consider the games, movies, and shows with something new coming out soon, and start your research there.
